Quick answer

Use the label as a starting point, then verify fit

Read the existing filter label and the equipment or filter-cabinet instructions. Record all three dimensions. If the old filter fits poorly, do not assume its label identifies the correct replacement.

A nominal size is a product’s labeled size category. Actual dimensions describe the physical frame. Products carrying the same nominal label can differ, particularly among deeper media filters. Compare the actual product dimensions and the cabinet’s documented requirements.

What 16 × 25 × 1 means

First two numbers

The two face dimensions, usually in inches for US residential products. A merchant may reverse their order; check the full specification.

Third number

The thickness category. A 1-inch filter is not interchangeable with a 4-inch media product simply because the face dimensions match.

Actual size

The measured frame dimensions. Do not assume a fixed deduction such as “always subtract half an inch.” Use the exact product data.

Part or cabinet number

A deeper filter may have a documented cabinet or replacement-part relation. Keep that identifier alongside the dimensions.

Measure without rounding away the evidence

01 · Switch the system off

Follow the equipment instructions for safe access. Use the designated filter opening, not an electrical compartment.

02 · Record the old label

Photograph the nominal size, actual dimensions, model, and airflow arrow before removal.

03 · Measure the frame

Measure face length, face width, and depth, including the rigid frame. Retain fractions or decimals rather than immediately rounding to whole inches.

04 · Check the rack or cabinet

Find its model and specified replacement. If no filter was present or the old one was crushed, prioritize the equipment documentation.

05 · Compare the proposed product

Check the actual dimensions, construction, and compatibility statement. The filter must seat correctly and the cover must close without force.

Use size labels to narrow the search

Label you seeWhat it tells youWhat still needs checking
16 × 25 × 1

A shallow filter in that nominal face-size family

What still needs checking

Actual frame dimensions, rack fit, and supported MERV.

20 × 20 × 1

A different nominal face size

What still needs checking

Do not substitute a 20 × 25 product or trim a framed filter.

20 × 25 × 4

A deeper media-filter family

What still needs checking

Exact cabinet, actual depth, end/frame design, and approved replacement.

Only a part number

A potentially exact replacement identifier

What still needs checking

Look it up in the manufacturer’s parts information before converting it into a generic size.

When it will not fit correctly

Do not crush the frame, cut a disposable framed filter to size, or force the access door closed. A loose filter can let air bypass the media. A distorted one may fail to seal or obstruct its intended support.

If two products share a nominal size but one does not fit, compare their actual specifications. Filtrete explicitly notes that nominal labeling can differ by brand or system for its refillable filters. Use product-specific dimensions rather than assuming a brand-wide rule.

If the cabinet requires a frame and separate refill, confirm both components. A refill without its intended frame is not automatically a complete replacement filter. Use approved spacers or adapters only where the cabinet manufacturer specifies them.

Before ordering a multipack

Keep a small record for each filter location: system or room, cabinet model, nominal size, actual dimensions, supported rating, and quantity. Two HVAC systems in one house may use different filters.

Check the merchant’s selected variant and pack count before paying. A familiar photo or title can accompany several sizes. Reconfirm the actual ordered SKU on the receipt, especially when switching brands.

After fit is established, use the MERV guide to assess filtration. A correct size does not by itself establish that the system supports a higher-efficiency product.

Common questions

Can I round measurements to the nearest inch?

Record the actual measurements first. Use the manufacturer’s nominal label and cabinet guidance to identify the correct size, rather than choosing solely by rounding.

Are all 4-inch filters the same depth?

No. Check actual dimensions and cabinet compatibility. Nominal thickness is not an interchangeability guarantee.

What if I cannot find a filter label?

Find the equipment or filter-cabinet model and its manual. If access or identification is uncertain, have the installed filtration arrangement checked.
