Pool skimmer not working: water level, suction, and basket fit.
Check why a skimmer is collecting poorly or pulling air, then identify the correct basket, lid, or weir before buying parts.

Separate a skimmer problem from a circulation problem.
A skimmer draws surface water and debris into a basket before water travels toward the circulation system. Poor collection can result from low water, a restricted basket, a stuck weir, an unsuitable operating speed, or a problem elsewhere in the flow path. Replacing the basket only helps when its condition or fit is part of the fault.
Some skimmers use different hydraulic arrangements, including venturi designs. Identify the model before interpreting a lack of suction or changing a valve. Never put a hand into a suction opening to test its strength. Keep swimmers out while equipment is abnormal or protective parts are missing.
What changed at the surface?
Water level, waves, stuck weir, and any visible vortex.
Stop if prime is lost; restore the specified water level and investigate recurring air entry.
Other skimmers and returns at the same pump setting.
Record the difference; check accessible debris and documented normal valve positions.
Return flow, pressure relative to the clean baseline, and pump display.
Investigate the system rather than ordering several new baskets.
Correct part, seating lip, handle, and damage.
Verify the exact basket. Do not add an improvised weight that can obstruct the water path.
Check water level and the weir.
Use the operating water level specified for the pool and skimmer. A level too low can admit air; a level too high can reduce the intended surface-skimming action on some designs. Waves and heavy use can expose an opening even when a still-water photograph seems acceptable.
The weir is the moving flap at the skimmer mouth on many designs. Debris or a broken hinge can stop it moving normally. Observe from a safe position. If a part needs removal, shut down and prevent automatic restart under the equipment instructions. Do not reach into an operating skimmer or remove equalizer or suction-protection parts.
Match a replacement pool skimmer basket.
Find the skimmer housing model and the manufacturer’s illustrated parts list. The pump strainer basket is a different part. A basket sold for the same pool brand or with a similar top diameter may differ in depth, taper, bottom support, handle, or seating rim.
Confirm that the listing supplies the basket itself rather than only a lid, handle, or sock. Check whether the original basket has an integrated feature required by that skimmer. A product described as universal still needs a documented fit check.

Vacuum plate, cleaner adapter, or skimmer sock and the model-specific instructions for using them.
Clean accessible debris without opening the pressure system.
Stop the pump and prevent automatic restart before opening the skimmer access. Remove and clean the basket only as directed in its manual. Keep the access cover controlled and replace it securely afterward. An accessible basket clean-out is different from opening a filter tank or taking apart a suction line.
A skimmer sock can collect fine debris but also load quickly and restrict flow. Use one only if compatible with the basket and system, and check it frequently. It is not a substitute for a damaged basket or for correct filtration. Do not operate with an absent basket when the manufacturer requires one.
When a stronger pump is the wrong next purchase.
A larger pump can create new flow, filter, energy, and suction-safety problems. First establish what changed: pump speed, a cleaner connection, a recent valve adjustment, a blocked flow path, or a replacement part. Pump selection requires the installed system, not just the pool’s volume.
For an above-ground skimmer, inspect accessible hose connections and mounting seals for external leaks. Cutting or enlarging a liner opening is a separate installation task. If low water returns after refill, use a controlled leak investigation rather than repeatedly topping up.
Common questions
Why does my skimmer basket float?
Wrong fit, a missing intended component, trapped air, or abnormal flow can move a basket. Check the part diagram and operating condition; a heavy object is not a reliable repair.
Can I connect a pool vacuum to any skimmer?
No. The vacuum plate, adapter, hose, and skimmer must be compatible. Follow the cleaner and skimmer instructions, including the required water level and valve arrangement.
Does no visible vortex mean no suction?
No. A vortex is not required for good skimming and may indicate unwanted air entry. Judge normal surface collection and equipment behavior without reaching into the opening.
Can the lid and basket share one part number?
They are often separate parts even when sold as a kit. Read the included-parts list and verify each documented match.
