Air purifier size and filters: compare CADR, HEPA, and carbon.

Choose a room air cleaner by the space, target pollutant, usable fan speed, and replacement filters rather than a maximum coverage headline.

Quick answer

Match the cleaner to one defined space and task.

Portable air purifiers filter air in a room or connected area. They do not supply outdoor air, remove moisture like a dehumidifier, or fix a pollutant source. Start by naming the problem: airborne particles, an odor or gas concern, or an unresolved moisture issue. Those tasks need different responses.

For particles, compare clean air delivery rate, or CADR, against room size. Then check noise at the speed you will actually use, placement clearance, power use, and replacement-filter availability. A large advertised coverage number can use a slower air-change assumption than another product’s claim.

Compare filtration by what it is designed to capture.

FeatureRelevant taskLimit to check
Mechanical particle filter, including HEPA

Capturing airborne particles passing through the filter.

Limit to check

Whole-device airflow, CADR, seal quality, and the operating speed.

Activated carbon or another gas medium

Reducing some gases or odors under the product’s tested conditions.

Limit to check

Type and quantity of medium, target gas, capacity, and replacement interval.

Washable prefilter

Catching larger debris before the main filter.

Limit to check

It does not make the HEPA or carbon stage washable.

Ionization or ozone-related feature

An additional treatment technology rather than a simple filter specification.

Limit to check

Check emissions and independent evidence; avoid products that intentionally generate ozone in occupied spaces.

Compare room size and CADR on the same basis.

Measure the room’s floor area and ceiling height. Include directly connected space when doors remain open and air mixes freely. A unit sized for a small closed bedroom will not necessarily clean an open living area or another room down a hall at the same rate.

CADR describes delivery of filtered air for specified particle tests. It is not the same as the fan’s unrestricted airflow or the filter media’s efficiency alone. Compare the same CADR units and check which particle rating is quoted. If a listing gives only total fan airflow, do not relabel it as CADR.

For a transparent planning check, equivalent air changes per hour equal CADR in cubic feet per minute multiplied by 60, divided by room volume in cubic feet. This is an idealized mixing calculation, not a guarantee of exposure reduction. Use the product’s documented room-size basis and account for tall ceilings, open doors, and continuous pollutant entry.

Why HEPA and an allergy claim are not the whole decision.

A filter can be efficient while the assembled unit moves too little air for the room. Conversely, a high-speed performance figure may come with noise you will not tolerate overnight. Check the speed used for a performance claim and whether a lower setting has documented output.

An allergy, smoke, pet, or mold label does not mean the device removes every relevant pollutant or treats a health condition. A particle filter does not repair mold growth or remove all gases from smoke. Use source control and appropriate ventilation alongside filtration, and seek suitable professional advice for persistent building or health concerns.

Match the replacement filter to the exact air purifier.

Record the complete purifier model, including suffixes, and use its replacement-filter reference. A similar cylinder or panel shape does not establish fit. Check filter height, sealing surfaces, tabs, end caps, and whether the replacement includes every required stage.

Verify the unit of sale: one cartridge, a pair, a prefilter only, or a combined HEPA-and-carbon assembly. A cheaper pack can contain fewer working stages. Keep the compatibility evidence and compare recurring cost over the expected service interval, without assuming the timer knows the filter’s actual condition.

Follow the manufacturer’s cleaning rules. Many main filters cannot be washed. Remove packaging before first use if the manual requires it, fit the element in the correct orientation, and reset a maintenance indicator only after the actual service.

Plan placement, noise, and daily use.

Keep the inlets and outlets clear under the product’s specified spacing. Do not hide a purifier behind a sofa or block it with curtains. Position it so cleaned air can circulate through the intended room without creating a trip hazard or exposing the cord to water or heat.

Compare an honest daily-use setup: room and door state, usable fan speed, power, filter cost, and the hours it will operate. A purifier you cannot tolerate at its rated speed may deliver less useful cleaning than the headline suggests. Recheck the room’s source problem if odors or particles persist.

Before buying

Room dimensions, connected space, pollutant task, noise limits, and intended operating hours.

Compare listings

Documented CADR, test basis, speed, power, and maintenance instructions.

Before reordering filters

Exact model, filter part relation, complete stages, and package quantity.

Keep tasks separate

A purifier filters air; ventilation exchanges air; a dehumidifier removes moisture.

Common questions

What size air purifier do I need?

Define the room and compare a documented CADR or room-size recommendation on a known air-change basis. Open rooms, high ceilings, and a lower usable speed can change the choice.

Will a HEPA air purifier remove odors?

HEPA is a particle-filter specification. Odor or gas removal needs an appropriate medium and evidence for the target pollutant, as well as source control.

Can I wash my air purifier filter?

Only if that exact element is designated washable. A washable prefilter does not make a HEPA or carbon cartridge washable.

Does an air purifier remove humidity?

No. A normal room purifier is not a dehumidifier. Measure relative humidity and address the moisture source when dampness is the issue.
