Quick answer

Choose for the room and the particles, not a universal best label.

A room air cleaner can reduce some airborne particles when it is appropriately sized and operated. It does not remove every allergen source or establish a medical outcome. Start with source control and cleaning, then choose enough particle clean-air delivery for the room at a speed you will actually use.

This is a desk review of two U.S. manufacturer specifications checked on October 14, 2026, not a hands-on test or a clinical ranking. The shortlist is useful for comparing a conventional room unit with a connected model. Confirm the exact regional model, current specifications, and replacement-filter availability before ordering.

Compare the shortlist on published capacity.

SituationWhat to verifyDecision
Coway AP-1512HH

233 smoke / 246 dust / 240 pollen CFM; 361 sq ft at 4.8 ACH.

Decision

Shortlist when fit, controls, and ongoing filters meet the room needs.

Levoit Vital 200S-P

250 CFM listed CADR; 388 sq ft at 4.8 ACH; exact U.S. model matters.

Decision

Compare connected features and usable fan speed, not maximum room headline.

Large or open room

Volume and CADR at a tolerable operating speed.

Decision

Move to more capacity or a multi-unit layout if these are insufficient.

Compare Coway Airmega AP-1512HH with Levoit Vital 200S-P.

Coway lists CADR of 233 cubic feet per minute for smoke, 246 for dust, and 240 for pollen on the AP-1512HH product page. Its room claim of 361 square feet uses 4.8 air changes per hour. Levoit lists 250 CFM CADR and 388 square feet at 4.8 air changes per hour for the Vital 200S-P, model LAP-V201S-WUS. Levoit’s displayed CADR does not identify the same pollutant-specific breakdown, so do not describe the two values as an independent head-to-head test.

Coway lists a 24–53 dBA noise range and 77-watt consumption specification; Levoit lists 23–54 dB and 50 watts. These are manufacturer figures under their respective conditions. The quietest setting does not deliver the maximum CADR, and a listed wattage does not establish annual energy use at your chosen speed. Neither number proves which product will be quieter in your room.

Translate capacity into a room-volume check.

For a 300-square-foot room with an 8-foot ceiling, volume is 2,400 cubic feet. Using 233 CFM in the calculation CADR × 60 ÷ room volume gives about 5.8 equivalent air changes per hour; using 250 gives about 6.3. At 500 square feet with the same ceiling, those calculations fall to about 3.5 and 3.8. These are arithmetic comparisons using published capacity, not measured room performance.

Higher ceilings, open doors, connected spaces, placement, and lower fan speeds change practical results. Compare coverage claims at the same air-change basis. A much larger “one air change per hour” room number is not comparable with a smaller room rating at 4.8 changes. For an oversized open area, consider a larger verified CADR or multiple appropriately placed units.

Use filters and controls to break a close decision.

Check the complete consumables set and replacement schedule for the exact model. A washable prefilter does not make the particle or carbon filter washable. Price a realistic supply of replacement filters, confirm availability, and inspect access clearance so maintenance is easy enough to do consistently.

Coway’s product description includes a bipolar ionization feature; review whether and how optional electronic functions can be disabled. Levoit’s page describes its HEPA-grade claim specifically in Sleep Mode, so do not turn that wording into an all-speed certification claim. For particle selection, comparable CADR and usable operating speed are more informative than a filter label alone.

Make a shortlist decision you can verify.

Consider the Coway when its pollutant-specific CADR, conventional controls, dimensions, and consumables fit your room and maintenance preferences. Consider the Levoit when its listed capacity, connected controls, and filter access suit the space. Check app requirements, light controls, dimensions, and return terms directly; those everyday details can matter more than a small difference in maximum capacity.

For a bedroom, inspect whether the display can dim and choose a usable nighttime speed. For a room with pets, place the unit where its intake stays clear and plan more frequent prefilter inspection. Do not place either unit behind furniture or expect one closed-bedroom unit to clean an entire home.

Compare ownership cost without inventing a ranking.

Use purchase cost plus replacement consumables and electricity over the same period. As a hypothetical energy calculation, an average measured draw of 30 watts for 12 hours daily uses about 131 kWh per year. Multiply by your electricity rate; this is not a measured result for either shortlisted model.

Keep the receipt and model reference, inspect the filter packaging before first use, and follow placement and cleaning instructions. An air cleaner is not a substitute for ventilation, correcting dampness, or a required smoke or carbon-monoxide alarm. If the goal is symptom management, use health advice specific to the person rather than treating a product specification as a treatment promise.

Common questions

Which is the best purifier for allergies?

There is no universal winner here. Choose sufficient particle clean-air delivery, usable speed, and maintainable filters for the actual room.

Were these products tested by Field 52?

No. This comparison uses manufacturer specifications and an original sizing calculation; it does not report laboratory or hands-on results.

Does HEPA mean the whole room is cleaned instantly?

No. Airflow, room volume, placement, operating time, and filter condition all matter.

Will a purifier solve mold or dampness?

It does not repair a moisture source. Find and correct the source and address affected materials appropriately.
