How to clean a garbage disposal and keep odors from returning.
Clean the splash guard and accessible buildup first. A deodorizing product cannot fix a blocked drain, a stalled motor, or debris left underneath the baffle.

Clean where food collects before adding a deodorizer.
For a disposal that works and drains normally, start with its splash guard or baffle and the accessible upper opening. Disconnect the electrical supply before cleaning. Use the manufacturer’s method and keep hands out of the grinding chamber.
If water is standing, the unit hums without grinding, or it leaks, fix that problem first. Cleaning instructions assume the appliance is mechanically sound and the drain is open.
An odor is a clue, not proof that the grinding chamber is the source.
Residue under the baffle or around the rim
Clean the accessible buildup using the model’s care instructions.
Retained waste or drainage trouble
Use the drain guide before adding a cleaning product.
Water supply or water-heater context
Compare a water sample away from the drain; see the rotten-egg-smell guide.
Missed residue, adjoining drain, or another source
Check the pattern across fixtures. Do not keep adding fragrance to an unresolved problem.
Start with a small cleaning kit.
A flashlight, a soft cleaning brush with a handle, a cloth, and the mild cleaner permitted by the disposal and sink manufacturer. Use gloves as directed by the cleaning product.
The model instructions and a basin for washing it separately. Some baffles lift out; others are fixed. Do not pull against a fixed guard or pry it loose.
Long-handled tongs after power is disconnected. A foreign object is an obstruction to remove, not something to grind away during cleaning.
Clean with the power isolated; run only after all tools are out.
Unplug the disposal in a dry, accessible location, or isolate it at the breaker if hardwired. Prevent another person from restoring power while you work.
If the manual permits removal, lift it out and wash both sides. Otherwise use a handled cleaning tool for accessible surfaces; do not put your hand into the chamber.
Clean the sink rim, the underside of the guard, and the accessible upper lip with the permitted cleaner. Avoid deep blind probing. Rinse the cloth or brush so you remove buildup rather than spread it.
Refit the baffle correctly, remove the brush, cloth, and tongs, and make sure nobody is working underneath. Restore power only after the work area is clear.
Use the manufacturer’s flushing procedure. During ordinary food grinding, InSinkErator specifies cold running water and continued flow briefly afterward. Do not run a disposal while a cleaning tool is in it.
Choose one approved method; avoid improvised mixtures.
Check the exact product’s appliance compatibility, dose, and sequence. Some require the machine to run during part of the cycle. That is a separate operation after manual cleaning tools are removed.
Treat these as model-specific maintenance options, not universal repairs. An allowed ice-cleaning cycle will not solve a blocked pipe. Citrus scent does not prove that accumulated residue has been removed.
Do not improvise by pouring these into the chamber. Follow the disposal manual and cleaner label. Never mix cleaning products or add vinegar to bleach.
Change the feed and water routine.
Scrape large scraps into the trash or compost and feed only foods the model is designed to handle. Keep grease and fat out of the drain. Use adequate running water during grinding, allow the food to clear, and follow the manual’s rinse period afterward.
Inspect the baffle during routine sink cleaning and clean it when residue is visible or odor develops. A particular household’s food use matters more than an arbitrary daily cleaning schedule. For a septic system, follow the system provider’s advice about whether and how to use a disposal.
If a sewage-like odor accompanies gurgling or multiple slow drains, move to the drain problem guide. For an odor that appears in the water itself, use the water odor guide.
Common disposal-cleaning questions
Can I put my hand inside if it is unplugged?
Keep hands out of the chamber. Use a handled cleaning tool or tongs as appropriate, and limit work to accessible areas.
Can I clean a disposal that has standing water?
Find the blockage first. Adding a cleaning cycle can leave more product and water trapped in the sink.
Why does it still smell after a tablet?
Residue may remain under the guard, or the odor may come from the drain or water supply. Check those locations before repeating the product.
